Vehicles that have been purchased on or after March 1, 2013 and titled in Georgia, are subject to the Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) but are exempt from sales and use tax and the annual ad valorem tax. Such motor vehicles are subject to a one-time TAVT based on the fair market value of these vehicles.

Please Note: This TAVT estimator does not take into account any exemptions or reduced rates.

The TAVT is calculated by simply multiplying the fair market value with the rate in effect on the purchase date. A reduction is then made for the trade-in when the sale was made by a registered dealer, but not when the sale was made by a private individual. You can apply for your title and pay TAVT as under:

  • The application for title and TAVT payment needs to be submitted in the county where the buyer resides. The TAVT must be paid at the time of initial title application itself.
  • If you purchase your vehicle from a dealer, then he must accept the application for title and TAVT payment on your behalf, thereafter deliver the title application and TAVT payment to the County Tag Office where the buyer resides.
