Common Roof Pitches and Their Applications

Rafter length = √(Run2 + Rise2) + overhang. For a 24-ft wide building (12-ft half-span) with 6:12 pitch: Rise = 12 ft × (6/12) = 6 ft. Rafter = √(122 + 62) = √(144+36) = √180 = 13.42 ft. Add 2-ft overhang = 15.42 ft total rafter length.

Three methods: (1) From the attic — place a 12-inch level against a rafter horizontally, measure vertical rise at end of level. That number is the rise (e.g., 6 inches = 6:12 pitch). (2) From the ground — use a long level and tape measure against the siding above the eave for an approximation. (3) Digital level app — hold your smartphone against the roof slope for a degree measurement, then convert: pitch = 12 × tan(degrees). Never go on a steep roof without proper fall protection equipment.
What pitch is best for snow country?
For regions with heavy snowfall (New England, Rocky Mountains, Midwest), steeper pitches (6:12 to 12:12) are recommended. Steep pitches shed snow naturally by gravity, preventing ice dam formation where snow melt refreezes at the eave. Low-slope roofs in snow country require higher structural load ratings and more robust insulation/ventilation to prevent ice dams.
